AMI’s opening mission in Yemen

Emergency support for primary Health Care in favour of vulnerable populations of Governorship of Hodeida

July 15th 2006, Aide Médicale Internationale will open its first mission in Yemen, in the governorship of Hodeida

Republic of Yemen is one of the 30 least developed countries in the world. But due to the richness of the area this country belongs to, human needs are often forgotten. And the international aid in favour of Yemen is poor. However, the extent and quality of health care supplied by the state are limited... It is particularly true in rural zones; 25% only are covered by health services.

From January 17th to February 14th 2006, Aide Médicale Internationale carried out an evaluative mission in Yemen, and more specifically in Governorship of Hodeida. This semi-desert area, located along the Red Sea’s littoral, is one of the poorest areas of Yemen, with a poverty index estimated between 30 and 40 per 100. It is in Al Hali and Al Marawa’a districts that AMI will begin a program of emergency support for primary health care in favour of vulnerable populations. This mission will cover a population of 54 546 potential beneficiaries.

The goals of this mission are :

  • The reinforcement of preventive activities in favour of pregnant women and children younger than 5 years old.
  • The reinforcement of curative activities and in particular paludism screening and treatment
  • The support for vaccination, in collaboration with UNICEF and the Yemeni Ministry of Health
  • Health education
  • The improvement of sanitary conditions
  • Epidemiologic monitoring.
