The new Salamati, focusing on nutrition, has just been published

Since 1994, Salamati (“good health” in Dari language) medical magazine, published by Aide Médicale Internationale, has been providing local Afghan healthcare workers with a continuous training tool. The lastest issue (# 37, second quarter 2008) of the magazine is focused on nutrition and malnutrition.

As one of the United Nations’ 8 Millennium Development Goals, fighting poverty and hunger is of the main objectives of humanity, and particularly Afghanistan. This new issue of Salamati, focusing on nutrition and malnutrition, gets to the depth of the problem, from a worldwide scale to community level. Because the communities are those who are primarily affected with nutritional difficulties, it is crucial to begin solving them at this level.

Designed for Community Health Workers, who have a highly strategic position in fighting malnutrition, the magazine can be read to all, because malnutrition concerns everyone.

Among topics discussed to explain the problem and its solutions, Salamati magazine details the benefits of healthy nutrition before tackling the signs and symptoms of malnutrition. By insisting heavily on the importance of breast-feeding, this issue is more than a distance learning tool, but a daily guide to maternal habits to adopt, anywhere in the country. Alongside hard-hitting facts on the current situation of nutrition in Afghanistan, the magazine also provides a lighter touch to the issue, with a step-by-step photographic guide for families suffering from nutrient deficiencies, healthy recipes, and true stories from the provinces that illustrate people’s situations.
